Bury guns
After seeing (illegal) gun confiscation post Katrina, how's the best way to safely bury guns? Wrap in plastic, cover in oil...what?

Re: Bury guns
If it is time to bury your guns, then it is time to dig them up....

Re: Bury guns
gen one of these to bag the gun:
http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/BAG197-1.html then put the bagged gun in an airtight box and bury it. |
Re: Bury guns
What about placing inside PVC pipe with threaded caps on one end.
Some of those moisture packets thrown in would help suck up some condensation. Wood stocks may suffer from that though. Just a thought, I have not actually done this. |
Re: Bury guns
Also it matters where you bury it.
Remember--nothing is waterproof forever. Bury it on the side or near the top of a hill, that you know is highly unlikely to ever be under water.... -end- |

Sunday, November 9, 2008 Obama on Gun Control - Hide your Guns Obama's "gun policy" can be found on his web site which states; As president, Barack Obama would repeal the Tiahrt Amendment, which restricts the ability of local law enforcement to access important gun trace information, and give police officers across the nation the tools they need to solve gun crimes and fight the illegal arms trade. Obama and Biden also favor commonsense measures that respect the Second Amendment rights of gun owners, while keeping guns away from children and from criminals who shouldn't have them. They support closing the gun show loophole and making guns in this country childproof. They also support making the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent; as such weapons belong on foreign battlefields and not on our streets. Get all the guns, ammo and full capacity magazines you can afford now while you still can. Prices are already going up and in some cases are double what they were only a month ago. Several cache tubes loaded with guns, ammunition and magazines hidden around your area is good insurance against eventual confiscation by Obama's National Security Force. Weapons obtained through private sales are best because you want to avoid the usual paper trail that comes with purchasing a firearm from a gun shop. Flea markets and gun shows are the first places to look. If you cant find what you want here, then putting an ad in a local newspaper or better yet one from another area stating that you are a collector interested purchasing firearms for top dollar, will bring in plenty of offers from people needing extra cash. Sections of 4", 6" or 8" SDR (Sanitary, Drain, Refuse) pipe will make excellent cache tubes. This type of tubing isn't cheap but is often left lying around at construction sites, ready to be "liberated". Be sure to use tubing with heavy wall thickness, at least 3/8". Cut the tubing to about 60" in length, this will allow enough room for all but the longest rifles. Slip-on type end caps are the best choice for sealing up the tube, avoid threaded caps or plugs as they are more expensive and tend to get fouled up with dirt, making them difficult to reopen after recovery of the cache. Using epoxy or PVC cement, permanently seal up one end with an end cap and test to be sure the seal is airtight. This is best done by placing the tube into water, sealed end down, and looking for leaks. The next step is to prepare the weapons for caching. It is important to give the weapons a thorough coating with some type of thick, rust-preventative grease. There is some divergence of opinion on just what type to use but I would suggest that just about any type of thick grease will do the job if the cache is for a short to medium duration (1-7 years). Don't be tempted to apply the grease too thickly, a thin coating will do just fine and will be MUCH easier to remove later (anyone who's experienced trying to remove grease from a cached weapon knows what I mean!). Care must be taken with telescopic or laser sights not to get grease into the optics or electronics. Keep the lens caps on and wrap the scope or laser with plastic bags and tape before applying grease to the weapon. Don't remove the scope from the weapon because it may be impossible for you to re-zero it back in later. Batteries should be removed from lasers before caching. Avoid disassembling weapons if possible as some small parts may become lost in the process. Be sure that ammunition is not exposed to contact with grease or oil as they can penetrate into the cartridge and make the ammunition useless. Seal ammunition into airtight containers or "ziplock" bags to reduce deterioration. Silica gel can be added to the tube, along with the weapons, just before sealing as a further rust-preventative measure. This step is not really necessary unless a very long-term cache is considered. The tube is now sealed up with the other end cap. This can be done by either applying grease to the inside walls of the end cap and sliding it into place or by permanently cementing the end cap on. The cap should be cemented if a very long term (10-30 years) cache is being considered or a very hostile environment, such as underwater or in a swamp, is chosen for the cache. You are now ready to choose a location to place the cache. A soil auger will be necessary if you intend to bury your cache tube underground. A manual soil auger is the best way to dig a vertical hole for the cache tube. Soil augers are used to dig fence post holes and are sold in 6"- 12" models. Soil augers are connected to a turning handle on top with a length of 3/4" pipe. The device will dig down to a depth of about four feet. At this depth, you will have to add a three foot extension to the pipe in order to dig down deep enough to bury a 60" tube one foot underground. Don't even consider burying your cache horizontally, it presents too large a target for metal detectors. When buried underground, a cache tube will be nearly impossible to remove as the soil settles in around it. For this reason be sure that the permanently sealed end of the tube is place down into the hole. In this way you can access, remove or replace weapons in the tube without removing it from the ground. Be sure to place your cache at quite a distance from your residence or retreat. At 100 feet distance any searchers must cover 31,400 square feet in order to conduct a thorough search, not a difficult task with modern metal detectors. At 200 feet the area becomes 125,600 square feet, still not an insurmountable task with the latest equipment and a dedicated team. Move out to 1000 feet and the area becomes 3.14 million square feet almost 71 acres!! If the survivor was to scatter old nuts, bolts, nails and other pieces of scrap metal throughout this area, even a very dedicated team with unlimited time and monetary resources would soon tire of false readings and move on to an easier case. A great place to hide a cache is right in the middle of a little-used rural dirt road. This way you can get to your cache quickly and easily while still having it located a great distance from your residence. In this case be sure to watch for any upcoming roadwork in the area as some construction worker may turn up your cache. |

Probably beats having all your backups in a safe.

Re: Bury guns
I think the OP meant that he wanted to bury "some" guns. After all, you can only use 1 at a time anyway. As long as you keep just 1 available for use, you should be alright. They don't all have to be available and exposed to theft in order to have a purpose of ownership.

Although firearm burial is specifically not recommended for public safety reasons, this model was first used to bury a semi-automatic rifle, scope, cleaning kit, and 900 rounds of .223 ammunition in an off-site location due to concerns about anti-gun measures that may be enacted and enforced in violation of citizens' rights under the Second Amendment of the US Constitution. |
Re: Bury guns
You can also spread some shot or ball bearings over your yard so that metal detectors get so many false hits it's difficult to tell if there's anything worth digging up or not.

Re: Bury guns
Odd. Went to Lowes today for a supply trip. Was looking for a gas auger-normal purposes. Employee said they were out.
Didn't really dawn on me 'till I read this thread. Couldn't imagine great demand for posthole digging. Most of the people around here either have tractors with PTO augers or know someone who can lend them one. I'll be thinking about this confluence of thoughts and events for a while. |
Re: Bury guns
Keep in mind with normal metal detecting, that you're only going to penetrate about 8" ~ 16" inches. Now that being said, if there is a REALLY large magnetic disturbance, that could easily go two feet or more. It depends on the type of detector.
If you see someone sweeping an area with one of these: http://goldprice.org/metal-detectors...ork-717957.jpg He's typically expecting to find things no more than 12" inches deep. The bread and butter of this type of detecting rarely goes beyond 16". That's not to say he won't find a hit on your Terminator 2 sized cache more than three feet down. BUT! Spreading junk in your yard will frustrate this guy. And he will most likely give up after digging up countless pop tops, bits of wire, and fishing weights. There is another metal detector that ignores smallish magnetic fields that everyone should be aware of. It looks like this, and is made to find things over 16 feet in the ground. http://www.bigvalleymetaldetectors.c...hics/TF900.jpg These types of Metal Detectors are called two box detectors, and they exist to find large chunks of metal in the ground. You're best bet against avoiding this type of detector is to bury a small Volkswagen beetle, and then stuffing your arms in the trunk. They'll give up once they see the hood of the car. |

Did I miss something, and the Obama man is going to start employing millions of Metal detector equiped Government workers to start searching millions of citizen homes/yards/fields etc....?
If it truly gets that bad, I believe they'll just toss you in a prison / lockup, or y'all can simply decide to just stand up for you 2nd amendment rights from the get go. Live standing or die kneeling...... |

Re: Bury guns
If you didn't want to bury a firearm, are there places around the house? I was thinking, open the plumbing access panel in the back of the bedroom closet and slide the gun between the cast iron bathtub and the outside wall.
Metal detector probably wouldn't pick that up. But, would that location be among the first they'd search? Any other in-house hidey suggestions? |

Hidden in the area above a stove hood. The storage area under most sinks is a false floor elevated about 6" from the real floor, if not, make it so. From your attic you can often access the voids in wallspaces. A bit of monofilament makes for easy retrieval. Insulation stuffed over the top hides what is under. Wrapped in a liquid proofed bag and stored in old cans of paint or roofing tar. Think, there are a million places all over the place. |

Re: Bury guns
I have been pondering the very same question as the OP lately. I hear people say to cache your good guns away and keep a couple crappy guns so when the cops come (for whatever reason), you can give them your 100 dollar 22 pistol and not your other guns. However I would have to think law enforcement would take you in if you didn't give them all the guns registered to you or at least a good percentage of them. I am of the mind that under these circumstances they are just looking for reasons to round patriots up or kill them.
The time to act is now, force is the only language everyone understands. |

Re: Bury guns
Here's a story of a guy that DID bury some guns. FOR FIFTEEN YEARS.
Then he dug them up to see if they were still functional. THEY WERE. Back in the early 1990s the outlook for the nation in general and gun owners in particular seemed rather grim to many people. A few years earlier in 1986, Congress had banned civilians from owning newly manufactured machine guns. There was ever more strident talk of banning semi-automatic weapons or so called assault weapons. Many of us regarded a semi-automatic rifle as the foundation of a home defense battery. Many of us believed that more laws banning ever more types of guns were imminent. About that time I acquired a Ruger Ranch Rifle through a private sale. I decided to stash it away in a safe place just in case my worst fear was to materialize, another gun ban... http://www.backwoodshome.com/articles2/wood115.html Hope that gives some insight. |

THAT IS STONE COLD FACT Your gun is the last line of defense againt Tyranny and the protection of self and family.
